Engineering Student Culture

Student overalls

Student overalls are the most important piece of equipment for a student. They show what the wearer studies, where they study, and for how long they have been studying. Above all, they are a way to express a student’s sense of belonging to their own student community. Engineering students in Rauma wear red overalls. At events organized by Rauman Insinööriopiskelijat RaunIO ry, a general rule of thumb is that everyone attending is expected to wear the overalls of their own student organization, unless stated otherwise.

RaunIO ry organizes an overall purchase order every autumn as soon as new students arrive, and this is announced in advance on RaunIO’s social media channels. At this time, every first-year student is allowed to try on sizes and order their very own overalls. The price of the overalls may vary slightly from year to year, but for example, in 2023, the price was €55 for members of Rauman Insinööriopiskelijat RaunIO ry. If you happen to miss the overall order for any reason, we occasionally have individual sizes available in our storage. You can ask about these by messaging us or by visiting our office in person.

If you feel that your overalls don’t stay up properly, RaunIO ry also sells stylish overall belts at our office for €7 each.

Student overall usage guidelines

1§ Student overalls may be worn starting from the overall baptism event, known as the Kastajaiset.

2§ Student overalls are personal. Do not lend them to others.

3§ Overall patches should not be sewn over existing sponsor logos unless it is absolutely necessary.

4§ Student overalls may only be washed while being worn by the owner.

5§ Student overalls are worn tied around the waist. The top part of the overalls should be folded so that the Rauman Insinööriopiskelijat RaunIO ry logo remains visible.

6§ Permission to raise (wear fully) the student overalls may be requested from the RaunIO ry board chairmanship once the overalls are filled with patches up to the waist.

7§ A piece from the leg of the student overalls may be exchanged with your partner. A piece from the sleeve may be exchanged with a friend.

Overall Patches

The most popular way to customize your student overalls is by sewing on overall patches. At RaunIO, we also believe that overalls should never be left empty, which is why we occasionally sell overall patches from a rotating selection to anyone interested. Patches can also be earned by participating in various student events, and participation patches are always included in the ticket price of events organized by Rauman Insinööriopiskelijat RaunIO ry and Rauman Liiketalousopiskelijain Kilta ry, unless otherwise stated.

Patches sold at the RaunIO office cost €3 each, and for every two patches you purchase, you receive a €1 discount.

Engineer’s Cap

The engineer’s cap, more commonly known as the imppulakki, is one of the most visible symbols of an engineer alongside student overalls. Unlike student overalls, the imppulakki is also worn at more formal occasions, such as anniversary celebrations of student organizations. The engineer’s cap is an officially recognized symbol of the engineering profession by Insinööriliitto.

Rauman Insinööriopiskelijat RaunIO ry organizes a joint order for engineers’ caps every year, which is announced in advance on RaunIO’s social media channels. The price of the engineer’s cap is €99 for members of Rauman Insinööriopiskelijat RaunIO ry.

The engineer’s cap can also be ordered independently by any member of the Engineers’ Union throughout the year, if you are unable to participate in the joint order organized by RaunIO.

Songbook

The laulumatti is an engineer’s most important tool at various events. Inside the songbook, you’ll find all the most essential engineering student songs, which are sung at events such as sitsit dinners and anniversary celebrations. You also shouldn’t forget the tradition of collecting greetings in your songbook—so always bring your own pen along with your laulumatti!

Rauman Insinööriopiskelijat RaunIO ry sells laulumatti songbooks at its office, and the price is €5 per piece.

Organization Ribbon

We now also offer organization ribbons! The organization ribbon is a great way to represent your own student organization at more formal events. The ribbon in the main colors of Rauman Insinööriopiskelijat RaunIO ry is worn diagonally across the chest with formal attire, and as a rosette on the left side of the bodice when worn with an evening gown. The ribbon is recommended for anyone representing Rauma engineering students at any formal event.

The organization ribbon can be purchased from the Rauman Insinööriopiskelijat RaunIO ry office and costs €2.50 per 0.5 meters. Approximately 0.5 meters of ribbon is needed for a rosette, and when worn straight across the chest, about 1.5 meters is required, depending on the wearer’s size.
